It’s been a while since I’ve built an Aquila Tail Set, however after being asked recently If I had a set I thought I would put one together.
I spent about an hour getting the plans in place and cutting the material.
3/16 x 1/4 sticks
3/16 x 1 for the shaped extremities
3/32 x 3/16 for the ribs
1/8 sheet tapered from 3/4 to 1/4 for the spars
1/8 sheet for some filler pieces
1/8 OD x 1 3/8 brass tubing for the pivot/ control rod

Gathering up the pieces, Note the end view of stab detail on the drawing, that means there’s an up and down to these. Who would have thought that. I know If I flip the stab set on a Graupner Cirrus, It flies different.

I file the groves to suite the 1/8 tubing the tubing sets in flush with the top surface, and 1 3/16 inch apart

I selected some TE stock that is a little heavier as I have seen some TE’s bend when the covering gets tightened

All the pieces, time to get gluing

Rudder up 1st

Check for fit of all the pieces

place the curved tip and keel then the 3/16 x 1/4 frame. Then add the 3/32 x 3/16 ribs

add a spar and filler on one side
Back to the stab set

a final check to see if the two tubes are flush

Laying out the frame as well as the four tube carriers

After carefully checking that the tubes are in the correct place the frame gets glued together

Then the ribs get trimmed at the ends and glued into place

:):)

Spars added topside and tubing epoxied in place

1/8 root filler sheet in place top side

top side finished and stab set removed from board

Bottom side stab set

rudder with last spar and 1/8 filler added

spars added bottom side

filler sheet bottom side

all that remains is sanding and finishing

rounded and contoured

🙂 Gone to Shipping out the door this AM, enjoy them Bill and Thank You
