Sailing Day, Landing Practice
I was out and had the winch set up by 9:30, launching south, I had my doubts though that this was going to last long
Early morning temperatures were surely under 10 Deg as it was a tad chilly
Had a dozen or so breakfasts to make , clearing the dining room, and one bath to get ready for later today. Now to the task at hand
There was not much of a breeze around 10 a little out of the south, I was set up and after a couple or three launches it was apparent that The wind was turning as I got a 2, 3 and 4 1/2 minute ride with the Legionair, launching with the wind just does not cut it
Time to move the winch.
Next I launched and I was out , but shortly back down to around 100 ft, I worked some low level lift and after 5 minutes or so I was up to perhaps 1000 ft.
Things were going well, I got settled in on the Golf cart and was gonna explore a long flight with the Legionair.
Out of the north I saw a dark dot and then the sound of a chopper, it seemed low enough that I thought I’d better pop the spoilers and come down, it veered of and headed east from me, and by this point I was down to 200 ft or so, and spent the next 7 to 8 minutes circling and working some low level thermals.
Got back on the ground at 21 minutes, that’s a record for me and the Legionair
By noon I was back around to the north launching towards the south again, and for some reason every time the chopper dumped it’s load of Vision, it would fly east across the field to get it’s refill LoL 🙂
It was by now already afternoon and around
1 pm 24 deg C and the wind appears to be turning again, (shake head)
4 Pm back to the North
Sent the Elio up the line, and felt a bump on the way up, turned downwind, and got out a nice ride of 11 minutes
Sent the Topaz up next and headed up wind, really high launch, got out to the south west and up over 1000 ft
soon the sun disappeared and I was on my way back down
What a nice day warm, little to no breeze , under 10 Km/h all day and shifting all the time.
Sometime during the day I got in a few flights with the Mirage, 1st couple launches were with the wind, and I was soon back on the ground. Last launch was better and I skied out with it, really nice plane and moves up wind swiftly considering it’s a 70’s plane
I had the Legionair put away, decided to change the battery and go back out with it. Such a graceful looking plane when it flies
6 Pm
Got one last flight with the Legionair, and then a 6 minute ride with the Topaz
Time to call it a day
